The Foley public parking lot near the intersection of Alabama 59 and U.S. 98 will be closed in the upcoming week while the site is paved.
The lot is located on the southwest corner of the highway intersection. Taylor Davis, Foley city engineer, said the parking lot will be closed Monday, April 13, through Friday, April 17.
“It’s the parking lot in the middle of downtown,” he said. “They plan to pave that next week. Right now, we’re going door to door to adjoining businesses to let them know.”
Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the project will not interfere with work going on to repair the building next to the parking lot. The project will not disrupt downtown businesses near the site.
“That’s their primary importance,” Hellmich said. “We’ll make sure we work around this so we don’t cause any issue. We want to cause minimal disruption to businesses and once it’s done, it will be a Class A parking facility that will serve those businesses.”
After the parking lot is paved and striped, city staff will install landscaping and plant trees in the landscaped islands.
The city will resurface, stripe and install concrete curb stops on about 2,300 square yards of parking area at the site.
Foley bought the parking lot in 2025. The city has also placed islands in the parking area and will add streetscape enhancements with trees, flower beds and shrubs along Alabama 59.
Drainage will also be improved to reduce runoff and improve environmental functions.
The project will support the growth of downtown businesses by providing convenient, accessible public parking and increasing access for customers, employees and visitors.
