With brick pavers and columns now marking its entrance, South Chicago Street in Foley has reopened.
Crews from the Foley Public Works Department and Horticulture Department completed work Thursday, planting trees to line the route between U.S. 98 and the site where the city’s new public library and community center is under construction.
Improvements include walkways for pedestrians and green spaces with additional street trees. The work is a streetscape project that is also intended to calm traffic in the downtown area.
The brick pavers and columns continue the improvements on the north side of Chicago Street at Heritage Park. The North Chicago Street project, which included the extension of East Jessamine Avenue and a new gateway to Heritage Park, opened in May 2025.
The project also includes decorative lighting installed by Riviera Utilities.
The improvements on South Chicago Street will create a corridor to the new library, which is scheduled to open in the summer.
The new library will have about 40,000 square feet of space and will be about twice the size of the current facility.
