As plans move forward with the new Aquatics Center, Foley plans more improvements at the park where the indoor swimming facility will be built.
The Foley City Council approved new plans for the park that will include improvements in lighting at the softball fields and removing overhead power lines.
Under the new plans, the Aquatic Center will include rest rooms on the outside of the facility. The exterior restrooms will allow park visitors to use the facilities without entering the Aquatics Center.
Jeff Lee, Foley parks and recreation director, said the city has money that can be used to improve lighting on the park’s softball field.
“We would like to use this available funding and put LED lighting on the softball field that is going to remain in Max Griffin Park,” Lee told council members.
The move will allow $204,000 to be used to upgrade lighting on the fields and make other improvements. In the project, the city will replace the overhead power lines at the park with an underground system.
The city and Riviera Utilities will also improve the electrical service and transformers at the park to meet the needs of the Aquatics Center and lighting systems.
The new indoor Aquatics Center will replace Foley’s municipal pool that opened at Max Griffin Park in 1953. The center will allow swimming and other activities to take place throughout the year.
City officials hope to go out for bids on construction of the center later this year. The project is expected to take about 18 months to complete after construction begins.
The current outdoor pool will remain open until the Aquatics Center is completed. The pool will be replaced with a different amenity after the center opens.
