The Foley City Council has approved a new technology initiative authorizing the Foley Police Department to utilize drones as first responders.
Through a partnership with Skydio, the largest U.S.-based drone manufacturer, the department will integrate advanced aerial technology directly into its emergency response infrastructure. The program is designed to modernize public safety infrastructure by placing visual intelligence on scene within seconds of an emergency call.
How the System WorksWhen certain emergency calls are received, a Skydio drone stationed within the city will autonomously launch and fly directly to the exact GPS coordinates of the incident. Arriving in a fraction of the time required by ground units, the drone will stream live video data directly to dispatchers and responding officers, providing immediate situational awareness.
Key Program BenefitsDepartment officials highlighted several key advantages of the new aerial response system:
- Enhanced Officer Safety: Live video feeds provide critical situational awareness before officers arrive, helping them de-escalate volatile situations and prepare appropriate responses.
- Faster Response Times: Drones reach emergency scenes ahead of ground units, allowing for rapid assessment of critical situations.
- Optimized Resource Allocation: Real-time video allows police and fire department supervisors to determine the exact type and level of response required.
- Search Support: Airborne capabilities provide crucial assistance during active search operations for missing persons.
The Foley Police Department emphasized that the drones will not be used for general surveillance. The program is strictly designed as an emergency response tool to provide visual context during active emergency incidents. Department leadership pledged to maintain transparency and share further updates as development progresses.
