Construction has begun on the final 1.25-mile segment of a nearly four-mile sidewalk network along Alabama 59, marking a significant milestone in Foley’s efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and connectivity. This new section connects Azalea Avenue and Pride Drive, near Foley High School, and will ultimately provide a continuous pathway from Miflin Road to Peachtree Avenue.
The project is financed primarily through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), which covers 80 percent of construction costs, with the City of Foley providing the remaining local match. Mayor Ralph Hellmich emphasized that the project is the culmination of years of persistent planning, designed to maximize local tax dollars while improving infrastructure for residents.
This initiative follows a dedicated investment strategy by the city. Since 2022, Foley has allocated $3 million to $4 million toward sidewalk development, supported by an additional $1 million annual commitment from the City Council.
The Alabama 59 corridor, which serves neighborhoods, schools, and businesses, is a central focus of these broader efforts. Similar recent expansions include the completion of sidewalks along North Cedar Street, and the city plans to further extend its pedestrian infrastructure into the Mills community. By combining local funding with competitive grants, Foley continues to prioritize infrastructure that supports safety, healthy lifestyles, and stronger community ties.
